So what are these amazing health benefits? Almost 5,000 years ago in China, tea was believed to treat conditions such as abscesses, tumors, lethargy, and bladder ailments. Since then, studies have been made to back these claims. Green tea, in particular because it is the most studied of all types of tea, is now known and proven to be helpful in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, and neurodegenerative disease, among others.

But what is it in tea which is responsible for these health effects? It’s actually many chemicals which are found in the leaves of Camellia sinensis (scientific name for the tea plant), one of them being polyphenols which are antioxidants. And you know what they say antioxidants can do, right? They help protect cells from “oxidative stress,” or the normal but damaging physiological process of acquiring free radicals, reactive substances into which the oxygen we intake are incorporated. Polyphenols help lower cholesterol levels, prevent blood clotting, and neutralize enzymes which encourage the growth of tumors. They also stimulate the immune system for better functioning, and deactivate other cancer promoters. And would you believe that it also has fluoride, which obviously makes for stronger teeth? As if those aren’t enough, it also has virtually no calories and a cup of its brew contains half the amount of caffeine you would get from a cup of coffee. Healthy, weight-reducing, and can wake you up when you need to be active and alert! No wonder tea is considered a wonder drug!
